Machine learning researchers and industry leaders gathering at 91¿ì»îÁÖ

On Thursday, Oct. 16, 91¿ì»îÁÖ will serve as host of the 14th annual , an event dedicated to exchanging ideas and sharing new research in machine learning—the technology that underpins generative artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini.
“BayLearn is the premier forum in Silicon Valley where academic researchers, AI scientists, and the companies at the forefront of this field get together to discuss advancements and opportunities in this area,” said Yi Fang, a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at 91¿ì»îÁÖ, where he is also director of responsible AI. “We are thrilled to be hosting, to share what our research has yielded and learn from others who are bringing their top research findings here.”
Featured Research
The daylong BayLearn Symposium, co-organized by University of California, Santa Cruz, will feature 65 posters throughout the venue from academic researchers in the field, showcasing new areas of study in machine learning, agentic AI, multimodal LLMs, AI infrastructure, AI for science, responsible AI, and domain applications. Twenty three of the posters will feature research from Santa Clara students or faculty members.
A few of the posters have been selected for short oral presentations or “lightning talks” where the researcher quickly shares the impact and highlights of their research.
Speakers
The event also will feature three keynote speakers discussing the latest breakthroughs, challenges, and future directions in machine learning and AI. They include:
- Bryan Catanzaro, vice president of applied deep learning research at NVIDIA
- Ronan Collobert, machine learning research scientist at Apple
- Christopher Manning, the inaugural Thomas M. Siebel Professor in Machine Learning in the departments of linguistics and computer science at Stanford University and investing partner at AIX Ventures
There also will be a panel discussion moderated by Across AI co-founder Nilou Salehi on the topic of agentic AI, which involves AI that develops “agency” to make autonomous decisions or take actions with minimal human interaction. Panelists will include:
- Rama Akkiraju, vice president for AI and Machine Learning for Internet Technology at NVIDIA
- Ed H. Chi, vice president of research at Google DeepMind
- Sandeep Uttamchandani, vice president of AI at Palo Alto Networks
- Diyi Yang, assistant professor in the Computer Science Department at Stanford University
Networking Event
The event is a popular opportunity for San Francisco Bay Area scientists in machine learning and industry representatives to meet and discuss new developments in their field. Sponsors for the event include Apple, Google, ServiceNow, Netflix, Scale AI, Splash, ChaLearn, and AT&T. Registration is by a lottery system, with guests asked to before lottery closes on Sept. 30, 2025.
